If your business uses Google Local Services Ads, there are important Google Local Services Ads policy changes coming October 1, 2026, and you need to pay attention to how your team handles incoming calls.
Google is updating its LSA lead charge policy, specifically around missed calls and follow-up calls. The change may sound technical, but for small businesses spending real money on Local Services Ads, the impact is pretty straightforward: more calls may now qualify as chargeable leads. And that means call handling is going to matter more than ever.
We are not implying that Google is implementing these changes to bill businesses for additional leads. We acknowledge that this will likely result in a higher percentage of leads that may not be credited or refunded because of this policy.
For all businesses, especially small businesses, each dollar spent on marketing counts. So, this is something very important to pay attention to. You want to make sure your campaigns are properly optimized and that you’re getting the most out of your investment.
What Is Changing with Google LSA and How It’ll Affect Your Business?
Starting October 1, Google says missed calls during business hours may be charged as valid leads when the caller stays on the line for more than 20 seconds.
There are some exceptions. For example, if your phone system requires callers to press a key to reach the appropriate department, Google’s 20-second timer will not begin until the customer presses that key.
Google Local Services Ads policy changes also impact how it handles subsequent calls. If the initial call does not qualify as a charged lead, but a later call between the customer and the business meets Google’s valid-lead criteria, that subsequent call may be charged.
Google says it is also implementing additional safeguards against robot calls, spam, and malicious call activity. In the weeks to come, after these changes are implemented, we will see how that goes and how effective those safeguards really are.
Why Small Businesses Need to Pay Attention: Don’t Pay More Than You Should for LSA Leads
From our perspective at Xperience Ai Marketing Solutions, businesses running LSA shouldn’t ignore this. Google is essentially expanding the circumstances under which a phone interaction can become a billable lead. Whether that lead ultimately turns into a legitimate sales opportunity for your business is another question.
You may be getting a call that is not going anywhere. That is what many of our clients simply call a “garbage lead.” And you may still be charged for that lead if you don’t pay attention to how you handle the conversation and how long you stay on the call. So that distinction matters.
Anyone who has managed Local Services Ads for a while knows that NOT every phone call is a good lead. You can receive calls for the wrong service, people looking for something outside your service area, solicitations, confused callers, people asking for advice, and other conversations that have very little chance of becoming actual business.
With these Google Local Services Ads policy changes, businesses need to be more disciplined about how they handle those calls.
XMS Honest Advice: “Train Whoever Answers Your LSA Calls”
Train everyone who answers the calls. Your receptionist, office manager, call center, or sales team that answers calls generated through LSA must understand this change.
Google LSA Management Is More Than Turning the Ads On
Managing Google Local Services Ads is not just about setting a budget and waiting for the phone to ring. You need to monitor lead quality, review what Google is charging you, understand Google Local Services Ads policy changes, make sure the account is configured correctly, and train the people receiving those calls.
This is also a good reminder of something we tell clients all the time.
Small changes can make a real difference when they are multiplied across dozens or hundreds of leads.
At XMS Ai, we will continue monitoring these changes and advising our clients on how they affect their campaigns and lead costs. We also want to see what happens once this policy is in place, because that is when we’ll better understand the real impact on lead quality, charges, and credits.
